"Hurry Drake,  the egg is finally hatching! Don't you want to see what the little lizard will look like?" My grandfather yelled as he stormed into my room. In surprise I fell off my bed, still half asleep, "Wha...huh? Yeah...yeah sure.." After a few minutes, I found my clothes and struggled to pull them on, then ran outside to find Marius laying around the egg with a look of pure impatience on his face, "Go find a rag and a bucket of water, we'll have to clean him off so he'll be able to properly breathe." I nodded quickly then ran off to the shack that held all of our tools and grabbed a torn rag and bucket, "Crap...well..this'll have to do." I ran down to the river and dipped the bucket into the water, filling it up to the brim then back to the dragon to hear an extremely loud CRACK coming from the egg, and seeing a little muzzle peeking out from the hole it created. "Come on little one, the world is awaiting your arrival.." Marius cooed to the struggling baby. His words seemed to spur on the tiny dragon to keeping squirming and pecking at the shell until it finally burst out and rolled onto the grass. Its black soft scales glistened in the sunlight, as it stretched out its small wings that were the same length as a small eagle, and the baby in total was the size of a 5 year old child. The little dragon opened its eyes to the very bright world to show a pair of a very dark hue of sapphire blue. When it turned to look at me, something inside of my chest connected and I instantly became relaxed, then kneeled down to wash off the clear goo that stuck to its scales. "H....Hello!" I gasped and looked at the dragon in surprise, "You can speak?!?" The newborn smiled and portrayed a set of small, but sharp, baby teeth, "Yes of course I can talk! All dragons can speak immediately after they hatch!" It was apparent that the baby dragon was a girl, which surprised me even more. "Except the big stupid ones..." Marius grumbled to himself, causing the girl dragon to giggle, then inspect the rest of her body, "I would really like to go explore on my own though.." Harridan came running over waving his arms, surprising her, "No no no no no! Not a good idea!" The newborn tilted her head in confusion, "Why not?" He was huffing and gasping for air, "B...Because..oh god...huff....you don't know the dangers of the world! It would be much more safer here." She frowned and sat back on her haunches, "Fine...I really would like a name now." I looked down and thought for a bit the proper name to give to the girl dragon, when the perfect name was said softly from Marius, "Atalanta.." I looked up at him in curiosity and confusion, "Atalanta...?" Marius smiled slightly, "She is a strong, beautiful, and courageous goddess. A suiting name for our adventurous little child." Atalanta seemed to like her name by the slight wagging of her tail, then spoke, "I love my name! Now where is the food? I'm starving!!" I chuckled and lead her to the cottage, "I'm sure mother has cooked up something by now."

Atalanta immediately began gulping down her food once it was placed before her, and surprisingly, my mother wasn't very frightened of the dragon, she looked more happy than afraid. Grandfather was outside, speaking softly to Marius while I played with my food at the table inside the cottage. Lost in my thoughts, I began to imagine far away lands with immense oceans, forests with trees that touched the sky, and animals that were bizarre in appearance and exotic. I didn't notice that Atalanta was rocking my chair, trying to get my attention, until she accidentally pushed it off balance and knocked me over onto the floor. Dazed and confused as I was kicked out of my dream world, I looked around for the culprit and found Atalanta looking very embarrassed and mumbling apologies. I sighed and spoke softly, still recollecting my thoughts, "I think we should take all of this outside.." Happily and joyfully, Atalanta ran outside. Everything in the world was still so new to her, and she was fascinated with every little thing that moved and was alive. Even rocks were an object of curiosity as she knocked them over and threw them around.  As she was distracted, I helped my mother clean up the destruction that Atalanta left in her wake of running to the outside, then hugged her and left the small cozy cottage. In the distance, I spied Atalanta struggling to crawl out of the chicken coop with no success, scaring the hens senselessly and leaving the rooster looking around in confusion. Chuckling softly to myself, I began to jog over to the baby dragon, "Atalanta, how did you get in there??"
